1.
The Autumn wind blows open the gate, St. Michael for you we wait! We follow you, show us the way, With joy we greet this Autumn day! Good morning, good morning, Good morning, good morning!
2.
Here we have gathered our food to share, Fall's golden light brings us courage and strength, And surrounds us all, and surrounds us all.
3.
Michael, Radiant and Bright, Lead us on, with your light, Archangel Michael!
4.
Thru the forest and the meadow on a mighty steed, The wind is blowing, the night bird calling, Faster than a deer in flight, riding bravely thru the night, Galloping, galloping, galloping, galloping.
5.
Yellow the bracken, golden the sheaves. Rosy the apples, crimson the leaves. Mist on the hillside, clouds grey and white, Autumn, Good Morning, Summer, Good Night!
6.
When Autumn mists gather And leaves fall gently down, New strength in me rises To bear life's waiting crown.
7.
Here I sit and wait for you 'Neath the spreading branches. Cool the grass with shade and dew, Sunlight round me dances. Hei, lu lia lia la, loud my voice is ringing, Hei, lu lia lia la, songs to you I'm singing. Fall is in the air today, Hear the wild geese crying. Don't delay come while you may, Snow will soon be flying. Hei, lu lia lia la, loud my voice is ringing, Hei, lu lia lia la, songs to you I'm singing.
8.
Young Rider 01:11
Young rider, apple cheeked one, come wither riding, On her steed so proud and prancing, come wither riding, No matter where I ride, Slavic mountains at my side, To Shemora, to Shemora.
9.
Michael with sword of light Blaze through the darkness of Earth's long night!
10.
Michaelmas time, Michaelmas time! Time is turning under the plough, Under the stars, under the signs, The ploughman toils with deep furrowed brow. He turns his thoughts against the cold, Buries his fears 'neath the Earth's deep mould. Frost, like fire, burns white on the blade, Of his iron share that red fire made. Michaelmas time, Michaelmas time! Time is bending over the scales, Over the bread, over the wine, The ploughman bows his head at the rail. He turns his thoughts towrads the flame, Raises his eyes to the thanksgiven grain. Stars, like spears, gleam over the tower, Of the house of God in Michael's hour. Michaelmas time, Michaelmas time! Time is changing the guard of the world. Deep in his heart, dauntless in mind, The ploughman guards against time growing old. He stands and studies the star-patterned sky, Fixes each spark in his wishing-well eyes. Stars, like seeds, strewn over the land And under the plough by Michael's hand.
11.
Unconquered hero of the skies, Saint Michael! Against the foe with us arise. Thine aid we pray, the foe to slay, Saint Michael. The heavenly banner thou dost bear, Saint Michael The angels do thine armour wear. Thine aid we play, the foe to slay, Saint Michael. Great is thy might, strong is thy hand, Saint Michael. Great o'er the sea, great o'er the land. Thine aid we pray, the foe to slay, Saint Michael.
12.
In autumn Saint Michael, with sword and with shield, passes over meadow and orchard and fields. He's on the path to battle against darkness and strife. He is the heavenly warrior, protector of life.
13.
September reaches out her misty hand. A touch of autumn falls to where we stand. As world grows dim our strong will must awake, An inner ilght the gift the soul must take.
14.
When Autumn mists gather And leaves fall gently down, New strength in me rises To bear life's waiting crown.
15.
Archangel Michael in radiant glory shines above Hero Michael will defeat the foe.
16.
Young Rider 01:14
Young rider, apple cheeked one, come wither riding, On her steed so proud and prancing, come wither riding, No matter where I ride, Slavic mountains at my side, To Shemora, to Shemora.
17.
Firmly on the earth I stand Michael's sword within my hand. When I conquer fear the dragon's chains I tightly bind, Michael's light within my mind. When I thrust against the monster's pride Michael is at my side! When I conquer within me fear and wrath, Michael in heaven casts the dragon forth.

about

These pieces are selections from the Cincinnati Waldorf School's Michaelmas Songbook, celebrating the changing of seasons, and tending to a self-conscious realization of inner strength and light.

"Michaelmas time, Michaelmas time!
Time is changing the guard of the world.
Deep in his heart, dauntless in mind,
The ploughman guards against time growing old.
He stands and studies the star-patterned sky,
Fixes each spark in his wishing-well eyes.
Stars, like seeds, strewn over the land
And under the plough by Michael's hand."
